Lexus UX 250h F Sport Luxury: a fashion-forward ride

This crossover offers lots of technology and refinement, as expected from Lexus.

Some cars, like some people, aren’t very photogenic. The UX body styling—featuring slits, sharp creases, and a gaping “spindle” grille—is, fortunately, more attractive in person than in photos. Lexus’ smallest and most affordable crossover SUV, the UX is aimed at younger, fashion-forward motorists.

With tidy exterior dimensions and a tight turning circle, the UX (urban crossover) is a dandy city runabout. Cargo space and rear-seat legroom aren’t overly generous, but supportive front seats and a well-damped suspension make for a comfy ride in town and on the highway. Despite run-flat tires, the cabin stays serene even on poor-quality pavement. The interior is beautifully crafted, with fine detailing. Android Auto isn’t available, but Apple CarPlay is. If you’re an Amazon Alexa fan, this is your car; use it to control smart home devices, read audiobooks, and lots more. And all UX trim levels come with a hefty suite of advanced safety features.

Drivetrain options are two: a 4-cylinder gasoline engine with FWD (UX 200) or the same engine paired with an electric motor and AWD (the UX 250h reviewed here). The hybrid is quicker off the line, but neither powertrain gives neck-snapping performance. Fuel consumption, however, is notably miserly with either one. Also worth noting is the Lexus Complete Lease, an innovative two-year/20,000-mile lease that includes maintenance and insurance.
